Art: Cartoon Cardboard Cutout Project

Dabble in a little sketching/painting of iconic cartoons.
February 7, 2010

After seeing the results of one of my residence mates’ art projects (a cardboard cutout of Ghandi from the MTV cartoon series “Clone High”), I decided to commence my own cardboard cartoon cutout project.

My first two forays into this venture are Stewie, the matricidal baby from “Family Guy” and GIR, the mentally retarded robot companion to the titular character on Jhonen Vasquez’ cancelled cult-series “Invader ZIM”.

A friend of mine in Industrial Design had a huge surplus of cardboard leftover from his project models so I obtained a few pieces and set out to do some quick pencil sketches. After getting the proportions on the characters right, I outlined everything with a black Sharpie marker in order to give the project some definition.

Once I got back from school for the year I found some time to sit down with some acrylic paint and fill in the outlined shapes with brushes of various sizes. After two coats of paint, I re-outlined everything with black paint and cut off the excess cardboard on the outside in order to finish the project.
