Art: Aria-Pro Bass Remodel

Giving a beat-up used bass guitar some much needed TLC... and paint.
February 7, 2010

This relative of Frankenstein’s monster came about in 2004 after I got a semi-wrecked bass guitar off a guy I went to school with in a trade for a Gameboy and $50.

The thing was in horrible shape, but I thought I could fix it well enough. I stripped the stickers and paint off the body and patched the chips and missing pieces in the wood. I sanded down the body and then I coated it with a layer of primer and then painted and sealed it with a clear coat (all car refinishing materials – courtesy of my father).

The blood splatter/hands effect was a spur of the moment idea that seems to have worked out quite well, as I’ve gotten fairly good feedback from people when they’ve seen me playing it.

Along with rewiring the electronics, I also replaced the split-p neck pickup with a set out of my friend’s Ibanez GSR model bass – which he had replaced with a set of EMG active pickups; the bridge pickup has yet to be changed.

I’m hoping to track down a new neck for the bass sometime in the future as well to help alleviate the buzzing due to an ill-properly repaired separation of the fretboard from the rest of the neck which was done by its previous owner using epoxy cement (which cemented the truss-rod in place) instead of wood glue and a c-clamp…… *sigh*
