Tech entrepreneur Olivia has been going through a rough patch since her husband Michael passed away: fending off corporate vultures and board executives while pouring herself into her work (creating a lucid dreaming machine) and pouring alcohol into her mouth (usually rum).
On waking from her latest bender, she’s greeted by a killer headache and an old fling named Adam. She rushes to get to work on time, but when she opens the door to leave she — unexpectedly — wakes up in bed again: “We need to stop meeting like this,” Adam repeats when she wakes. Again. And Again. And Again. Olivia has become trapped inside her prototype device “Pensieve”.
Together, with the help of VI construct Val — the curator/interface engine of her device — Olivia will have to wade through the virtual world fabricated by the nefarious forces who want to steal her creation, confront her memories that leak into the program, manipulate the environment to gain the upper hand against a ruthless hacker, and outwit a shadowy presence that pursues her every step of the way.
Recursiveness is a sci-fi psychological thriller short-to-feature concept surrounding the issues of mental health, traumatic memories, revenge, corporate espionage, late-stage capitalism, and game theory. The film is currently in development.
